Key Interior Design Trends 2021
2020 has been a strange year indeed! We have all stayed at home for long periods of time and that has caused us to consider what we are purchasing and what products we are allowing to enter our homes. And as a result of this there is a big focus on recycled spaces and sustainability.
In addition to the above we are all continuing to spend a lot more time at home and looking to add functionality as well as comfort to our homes.
As a result if this, the key interior design trends we are seeing for 2021 are:
Upcycling and reusing
COVID-19 has given us all time to look at the items in our homes and consider upcycling our furniture or repurposing it to give it a new lease of life. For example, using console tables and bureaus as office desks; old mirrors in bathrooms; antique shelving in kitchens, etc.
Sustainability
Linked with the above, sustainable and affordable designs are also becoming more popular. We are all shopping more responsibly and supporting independent local shops.
Search for items in antique fairs such as the IACF or reclaimed items that will give your home an extra layer of individuality. Purchasing items from independent shops will guarantee you find that item that will reflect your personality as well as supporting the local economy.
Get close to nature
Incorporating nature into our spaces has been a trend for the last few years. I would never consider it just a temporary trend as nature plays such an important role in our well-being, especially in 2020! We have all wanted to escape outdoors and breathe in fresh air.
Bringing the outdoors in isn’t just about adding plants to our interior spaces; it’s about using materials that make us feel much closer to nature. Such materials include natural fabrics like cotton and linen. Think jute, cotton and wool rugs; as well as lighter woods.
It’s about choosing materials that help create an overall natural look that will give you a sense of calm and relaxation.
Zoning
Up to recent years open plan spaces have been very much in demand. But now, with us spending more time at home, it is important to be able to zone these spaces so that they become multi-functional. By zoning these spaces we also achieve a space that will make us feel more secure and comfortable.
To make this work you may need to consider appropriate storage which is not just about adding shelving but having versatile pieces of furniture that can double up as storage items such as footstools, beds and benches. These clever storage solutions really help when you need to make small spaces multi-functional.
Having spaces zoned will give us all a sense of calm in these uncertain times and give us a head start for 2021!
